Alternate
Education - KING GEORGE CAMPUS
Alternate Education at King George has been in operation since 1998. The purpose behind our Alternate Education off campus site, is to provide the students with the opportunity to stay in school when that may not seem possible. Some of our students need to work and support themselves. The Alternate Education Program offers them that possibility, in conjunction with earningcredits.
What is KING GEORGE A.E.C. all about?
Some students find regular high school frustrating and overwhelming. Some
students experience difficulties in their personal lives. These issues can
lead a student to consider dropping out of school. King George A.E.C. is designed
to help these students. Some students re-enter the regular system after a
term at King George A.E.C.. Some students complete their diploma requirements
through King George A.E.C. and enter the work force directly, or go on to
college or apprenticeship programs.
ALEP
The King George Alternate
Education site began with one Program Structure known as the A.L.E.P. structure.
This stands for Alternate Learning Experience Program. This program is best
suited to those students who want to finish off their credits and graduate.
However, it also helps those students who have greater than 12 but fewer than
25 credits.
It is our goal to send as many students back to their home school as possible.
The A.L.E.P. structure consists of one full day in the classroom which in turn offers the students the opportunity to earn one full credit. The student is expected to have a job and work at this job for the duration of their school week. While working, the students may be paid by their employer. The students may also earn work hours towards a work credit. For every 110 hours worked, the student may earn one full work credit.
DALUS
The second structure added to the King George Alternate Education Center was D.A.L.U.S. This stands for Denison Alternate Learning for Under Sixteen.
Our under 16 program is for students who are under 16 years of age and have been truant. These students attend the Program for either an early morning, mid –morning or afternoon session.
Our under 16 program teaches these youth how to be students. They learn to come in to class, to be respectful, settle down to work and complete what is expected of them. They request help when they need it. Many of these students will end up in A.L.E.P.course and some will return to their “home” school. It is a well developed structure, One that seems to work for the students and parents.
INTENSIVE
The third structure
added to the King George Site was our Intensive Program.
This program is based on 9 week blocks, two 9 week blocks per semester. The
Intensive Program is for students who have fewer than 12 credits. It offers
the students the opportunity to gain the core grade 9 and 10 subjects they
are missing.
Some of these students end up attending A.L.E.P. courses once their credits
count is greater than 12 credits. Others opt for returning to their “
home” school.
