Grade 9 Visual Arts This course offers an overview of visual arts as a foundation for further study. Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials through working with a range of materials, processes, techniques, and styles. They will learn and use methods of analysis and criticism and will study the characteristics of particular historical art periods and a selection of Canadian art and the art of other cultures. [back to chart] Grade 10 Visual Arts This course emphasizes learning through practice; building on what students know; and introducing them to new ideas, materials, and processes for artistis thinkin and experimentation. Students learning will include the refined application of the elements and principles of design, incorporating the creative and design processes, and the relationship between works of art and their historical contexts. Course objectives may be achieved either through a comprehensive program or through a program focused on a particular art form (eg., drawing, painting). [back to chart] Grade 11 Visual Arts This course provides students with opportunities to further develop their skills and knowledge in visual arts. Students will explore a range of subject matter through studio activities, and will consolidate their practical skills. Students will also analyse art works and study aspects of Western art history, as well as art forms from Canada and other parts of the world. [back to chart] Grade 11 Photography This course will focus on black and white photography including dark-room procedures, composition and the history of photography. Students must rent a 35mm camera ($90-$115) or provide their own camera in addition to course costs listed above. [back to chart] Grade 11 Illustration This course will focus on several areas of graphic art including perspective, 2-D design, illustration, and typography. Media include watercolour, acrylic, and technical pen. Design theory and history will also be components. [back to chart] Grade 12 Visual Arts Three disciplines are explored: drawing, painting, and sculpture. Media include charcoal, pastel and oil and acrylic paints. For the theory component, emphasis is on the Impressionist and Modern periods. These studies are enriched with required field trips to art galleries. [back to chart] Grade 12 Photography Designed for students who have completed Grade 11 photography and wish to continue with a more in-depth study of the medium. Emphasis is placed on self-expression and experimentation. Projects include portraiture, commercial and portfolio work. Field trips are required. Students may rent 35mm cameras ($90 -$115). [back to chart] Grade 12 Illustration This is the second year of graphic arts designed for students with a special interest in a career in commercial art. More advanced techniques are taught, building on those learned in Grade 11. Projects include package design, advertising and book illustration and logo design. [back to chart] Grade 12 Drawing and Painting This course is designed for the serious art student interested in experiencing new techniques. Studio media include clay, plaster, acrylic paint and mixed media and are complemented by analysis and interpretation of the works of various artists. Field trip required. [back to chart] |
