"Never come into the theatre with mud on your feet. Leave your dust and dirt outside. Check your little worries, squabbles, petty difficulties with your outside clothing -- all the things that ruin your life and draw your attention away from your art." -- Constantin Stanislavski

"Every life has a story -- to be human is to tell it."

This course will examine the ways in which theatre may be used as an instrument of social change and as a facilitator of communication and understanding. This course will focus on the following areas of study:

Units

  • Ritual -- The origins of Theatre
  • Acting Theory -- Stanislavski's Method
  • Social Theatre
  • Political Theatre -- Para-Theatre Seminars
  • Your Theatrical Voice -- Playwriting

Evaluation

  • Theory (Seminar - Tests - Method) --------------20%
  • Creation (The creative process and "product") ---30%
  • Analysis (Portfolio - Reflection - Playwriting)-----20%
  • Final Exam (Performance and Written) ----------30%

You will be required to keep a Response Journal, which may include creative ideas, observations, feelings, dreams, sketches, designs, reviews, sculpture ... impressions relating to in-class and out-of-class experiences. The purpose of this portfolio is to make you more aware of your own ideas, reactions and feelings.

You will be required to complete at least one Play Review based on the performance of live theatre. Preferably this review will be of a performance at the Canadian Stage Company.

NOTE:

This senior level drama class requires a full commitment to attendance and punctuality. You will be required to do an enormous amount of performance and group work. Be responsible to yourself and your peers.
