To be successful in this
course you must watch, listen to, and analyze mass media.
You will need access to a television, VCR/DVD and audio equipment.
Computer access to the INTERNET at home would be helpful,
but access is also available through the school library.
Much of the work in this
course is hands-on, including the creative production of media
products (ads, script, film). However, we also study a variety
of TV programs, movies, music videos and commercials. Be prepared
to unleash your creativity and to deconstruct
the work of others.
Media literacy is concerned
with developing an informed and critical understanding of
the nature of the mass media, the techniques used by them,
and the impact of these techniques. It is education that aims
to increase students' understanding and enjoyment of how the
media work, how they provide meaning, how they are organized,
and how they construct reality. Media literacy also aims to
provide students with the ability to create media products.
It is important to know
that some of the material may be controversial. Increasingly,
it is the responsibility of media students and teachers to
view, discuss, and analyze material which explores potentially
sensitive issues such as appropriate language, violence and
gender roles.
