The ENG1D
course is designed to help prepare you for the academic challenges
and demands of the Academic and University stream at Dr. Denison
Secondary School The emphasis is on improving your reading
and writing skills, your analytical skills, and your ability
to work both independently and co-operatively. Follow this
link for a copy of the first
day handout which outlines the unit content. Students
and parents should also reference the Department Policy handout
and webpage.
The theme of the GradeNine Academic English course is "Adversity
and Prejudice." Through each unit, students
will explore how various people (as individuals and within
the context of larger cultures and communities) face adversity,
and then consider how this shapes their perspective. There
will be extensive opportunities for independent reading.
Evaluation:
All evaluation is guided
by the four categories of the Achievement
Chart for students in Grade 9 and 10 English:
Knowledge, Thinking, Communication and Application. Assessment
is recorded in the following categories:
Term Work (70%)
- Writing (40%)
- Performance Tasks (30%)
Final Assessments (30%)
- I.S.P. (15%)
- Final Exam (15%)
