Congratulations! The
Leadership and Peer Support Program is a unique
adventure, one which you have been handpicked to experience.
You will probably find that this course differs significantly
from your other classes as you step out of the role of student
and into the role of teacher! Over the semester you will be
working to develop your skills in communication, interpersonal
relations, coaching, leadership, teamwork, and conflict management
by applying them in your new role!
The focus of your studies will be in developing not only
your own skills, but also the reading, writing and social
skills of your Grade 9 Applied and Essentials students. Some
groups of students will also be involved in a rotation experiences
various workshops. At times you may feel nervous and frustrated
with your new role as a teacher/educational colleague, but
we are confident that together with your teacher and your
classmates you will work through any problems you may encounter.
This is going to be a great semester for both you and your
students!
Course Content:
Following three weeks of intensive theory, you will be matched
with students from one-three separate Grade 9 classes, each
of whom you will work with two days a week. Those of you not
paired with students on alternate days will rotate through
a series of two week long workshops. The remaining day (Workshop
Wednesday) is spent eating great food, sharing weekly experiences,
and completing workshops to further develop problem solving,
leadership and support skills.
Course Evaluation:
You will be evaluated in this course for both TERM work (70%)
and FINAL summative activities (30%). The final Summative
Assessment will take the form of a two part promotional video/powerpoint
presentation/scrap book and a written examination. For both
TERM work and FINAL activities, your grade will be based on
your abilities in the four assessment categories – Knowledge,
Thinking and Inquiry, Communication and Application.
