Final Exam

Welcome to the Grade 11 English Component of the Outdoor Education Program at Dr. Denison Secondary School. Throughout the semester we will be fulfilling the expectations of the ENG3U course by exploring writing which is influenced by or directed towards the outdoors. Students will explore the place of nature in the development of individual and cultural identities by exploring texts ranging from creation stories, philosophic statements about nature and humanity, plays, poetry and contemporary fiction (short stories and novels) and non-fiction (essays and books). Distinctions will be made between “nature writing”, “wilderness writing” and “environmental writing”.

The course is designed to accompany the three credit Outdoor Education Program offered at Denison. Students in the course will be working on interdisciplinary projects which tie into activities in this program, specifically the numerous experiential trips and activities which are planned. Personal writing about these experiences will be a main focus, especially during times where the class is out on a trip.

Assessment and Evaluation

Term Work: 70%
- Term work activities, including essays, presentations, seminars, projects and tests, will be worth 70% of the final grade. Evaluation tools will follow the Achievement Chart Categories for Senior English: Thinking, Knowledge, Communication and Application.

Final Assessment: 30%
- Final Assessment projects will be worth 30% of the mark in the course. In addition to a Final Exam (15%), students will be responsible for completing a Personal Essay reflecting on their experiences in the program and their application to the course syllabus.
