Welcome to the Resource Page for teachers of English at Dr. Denison. Here you will find links to a variety of online resources which are useful in planning and delivering the curriculum. As you find resources on your own which you feel would be useful to post, please email me at richard.macpherson@yrdsb.edu.on.ca with your suggestions and I'll post them to this page.

We've collected resources under the following headings:

Curriculum Documents

  • The Ontario College of Teachers - link to the OCT website where you can find information on the Standards of Practice, among other things
  • http://www.curriculum.org/ -link to the Curriculum Services Canada site, with links to the Ontario Curriculum page and the related Course Profiles and Ministry Documents

Department Information

Style and Structure Resources

  • A great resource is the online writing lab (OWL) at Purdue University. This site has great tutorials as well as reference pages for essay writing and links to MLA documentation information. Bookmark this one. http://owl.english.purdue.edu/
  • The only officially sanctioned Modern Language Association guide for citations is available at http://www.mla.org/main_stl.htm . This is a great place to go for difficult citation issues.
  • Daily Grammar *A daily grammar review site which will email you grammar issues/problems to consider. Fun for Mr. Zantingh!

Literacy

Interactive Software and Games

  • http://web.uvic.ca/hrd/hotpot/ This is the link to the Hot Potatoes software package that we've used to design the interactive review games for courses like ENG4U. The software is free to educators, so provided that you have a relatively "new" computer, you should be able to download and play with this at home.
  • http://ca.encarta.msn.com/encnet/features/quiz/ A link to an MSN site which offers lots of interactive grammar, vocabulary, spelling and literature quizzes.
  • readwritethink.org has lots of interactive features for teachers and students. There are lots of "graphic organizers" available here as well. This is one of the best online sites available for helping with the teaching of English through technology.

Creative Writing and At Risk Students

  • Power Point Presentation for Literacy Plus Teachers
*all of the links to exemplars on the Power Point presentation may not be working, but there are links you can explore on the English Webpage.
  • Try the Denison Reads link to see the Book Club stuff for Grade 9 through 12
