The five core units are based on selected literary and non-fiction texts and will make up 70% of the course mark. The Grade Nine course concludes with two summative activities worth 30% of your grade. These activities include an in-class essay based on the study of poetry, as well as the final exam. In both summative activities, students will demonstrate the key expectations explored throughout the first five units. Unit One: Narrative Forms *approximately 5 weeks Parents and students should note that curriculum materials, including copies of assignments, significant due dates, supporting resources and interactive review activities are posted on the ENG1D1 web page. Students will: read fiction and non-fiction be assessed through various quizzes for knowledge and understanding gain an understanding of the elements of narrative through creative exercises and critical activities gain an understanding of the form of expository paragraph writing gain an understanding of the role of point of view in narrative fiction and essays Unit Two: Thematic Study: Prejudice, Adversity and the story of Anne Frank *approximately 3 weeks Students will: read dramatic version and novel excerpts from Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl (as a class and independently) gain an understanding of the history of the Holocaust and WWII be assessed through various quizzes for knowledge and understanding gain an understanding of letter writing (reflective writing assignment) explore media representations of the Holocaust and contemporary acts of genocide Unit Three: Romeo and Juliet *approximately 4 weeks Students will: read William Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet be assessed for their understanding of the play through various quizzes and assignments understand and review literary devices gain an understanding of Reflective Journal Writing Perform a Dramatic Reading Write/create a Shakespeare Newspaper Unit Four: Poetry *approximately 4 weeks Students will: read various poetic works by historical and contemporary poets and songwriters gain an understanding and appreciation for poetic analysis write and create their own poetry be assessed for their understanding of poetic forms and devices through various quizzes write and present a formal analysis of a poem of their choice complete a personal poetry anthology and participate in a Poetry Coffee House Unit Five: Book Clubs *ongoing throughout the course Throughout the course students will be required to complete three/four independent novel studies. The students will read three/four novels of their choice (from the White Pine novels available in the library) and complete an assignment for each. The first Book Club project involves a Verbal-Visual Product and Expository Paragraph. Students may complete up to four Book Club assignments.
