Course Description
This course will emphasize the development of reading,
thinking and communication skills as they pertain to the
workplace environment. An important focus will be on using
language clearly, accurately, and effectively in a variety
of contexts. Students will read short stories, novels, poems,
and newspaper and magazine articles, with particular attention
to locating important information and identifying main ideas
and supporting details.
Units of Study:
1. Narration
- During this unit we well explore a variety of narrative
genres. Students will be expected to read a number of short
stories as well as a novel. The focus of this unit will
be on identifying important information, paragraph writing,
film analysis and reflective writing.
2. Letter and Essay Writing
- During this unit students will explore a variety of writing
techniques. The focus will be on developing your writing
for the workplace, interviewing skills, suitable career
options and employability skills.
3. Poetry Analysis
- Students will explore a variety of poetry types while
creating their own poetry
anthologies. Students will also be expected to analyse a
number of poems which are
directly related to the course theme.
4. Investigating the Media
- In this unit, students will investigate and interpret
various forms of writing found in the newspaper while focussing
on the “Classified section” in connection to
different career opportunities

Term Work - 40%
Term Writing - 30%
Final Assessment Project - 15%
Final Assessment Exam - 15%
