On October 17th, 2001, a group of hardy Grade 9 students kicked off their unit on Canada’s Natural Resources spending a day in our York Regional Forests-Hollidge Tract. The Niners experienced man-made and natural woodlot management first hand.
“Sustainability ” was our theme as we explored the use of our public forests based on the continued health of the forest ecosystem. Although the weather was challenging, our students braved the elements and thoroughly enjoyed the days outing. Activites included an ecology hike, eco-games, and meeting real foresters and loggers.
Students witnessed good forest management practices and recognized how we can protect this valuable resource for our future. Thanks to Len Munt, Regional Forester on the York Region Forest Advisory Team and Lorie Parrott, Naturalist, for hosting Denison students at their forest school.
Our studies were capped off with hot chocolate and a picture with a forest favourite “Smokey Bear”.
