Is not a summary of interesting information* First, the comparative essay assumes that you have done the research, and then requires that you go beyond this in your thinking in order to compare the two. Secondly, you must decide the basis upon which you will compare the two in order to deal with the topic. These topics of comparison can be brainstormed beforehand, and then revisited once your research is done and reflected upon. These should be insightful, relevant and meaningful criteria for the topic. Thirdly, it requires that you now draw a conclusion based upon the comparison that is arguable. Eg. Who/what was greater and why? What was the role and why? Etc. Fourthly, the essay will then be written using the conclusion as your thesis and the topics of comparison as your body paragraphs. All comparisons are well supported with excellent examples and quotations from experts in the field. Finally, each body paragraph of proof will make direct comparisons between the two people or things in your topic. Never deal with each singly or in separate paragraphs. Never expect the reader to draw your conclusions! TO COMPLETE Research the topic and make detailed notes. These must include quotations from historians on the topic. All notes must give sources and page numbers for specific facts and quotations. All notes should be reviewed and categorized based upon the key topics of your research. An essay outline will be submitted that details the paragraph topics and a brief look at the specific content, and quotations that will be included in each paragraph. The formal essay will include foot(end)notes, bibliography and be proof read for errors. Submit all notes, all previously marked material - everything - with the final copy. ASSESSMENT Notes - detailed, properly documented, accurate, categorized Outline - organized, makes a comparison, provides examples EVALUATION Notes - detailed, properly documented, accurate, categorized 10 mark Essay - formal, proof read, accurate, bibliography & footnotes 50 marks THE COMPARATIVE HISTORICAL RESEARCH ESSAY Format: 1000-1200 words Title page Double spaced if typed, one side only Include endnotes or footnotes, and a bibliography Organization Thesis: Your essay must have a focus that you argue and prove. This will be an opinion, your conclusion based upon your comparison. Introduction: * Begins with a statement on the general topic of your essay. Think about it! * States your thesis, then outlines how you will prove the thesis to be true. Body: 1. The first body paragraph will provide any necessary background information. 2. The remaining paragraphs will provide the proofs of your thesis. Use one argument per paragraph, explaining each with factual examples. Explained examples and quotations must support all arguments. Start with the 2nd most important argument; end with the most important one. Topic sentences must link all paragraphs to the topic, and to one another. Conclusion: * This should sum up your main points of the argument. * Do not make it a carbon copy of the introduction. Think about it! Organization example: Topic: Compare the fall of the Roman and Egyptian Empires Intro: Thesis - Internal weakness was the main reason why the Roman and Egyptian empires declined. Background: Outline the location, growth, extent and time period of each of the empires Body Paragraph 1: The decline of the military made the empires susceptible to attack. Economic problems weakened both empires' prosperity and trade. 3. Slavery & religious problems weakened the will of the empires. 4. Incompetent rulers failed to solve the problems and caused greater weaknesses. Conclusion: Use of Quotations (both primary and secondary) You must document the source of: 1. All direct quotation of someone else's words 2. all statistics 3. all ideas that are unique to an author eg. The 3 effects., the main cause Be sure to: check your sheet on how to do endnotes or footnotes for quotations check your sheet on how to properly format your bibliography never say "I" in the essay.
