If you are quoting a source, you will cite the page number in brackets all bibliographic information must be noted at the top of each 1st page of notes or be on an attached library square * to be good, you will have moved beyond encyclopedia and Internet dependence Possible Essay Theses Questions: you must consider what historical questions you might ask on the topic which historians have written on this topic or have a relevant viewpoint? - historians deal with causes, effects, importance, judgments, comparisons, etc. Example: Is there a single cause to the Reformation? What is the most important effect of the Napoleonic era? 2. Notes Summary 10 marks Knowledge - this is a summary of the key ideas and terms you have found so far this will illustrate the depth of your understanding of the facts gathered so far eg. What main ideas did the person I am to portray believe? 3. Bibliography 10 marks Application - provide a properly formatted bibliography of all sources found thus far for your research Stage 2 Essay and Seminar Formative Assessment and Final Evaluation 1. Annotated Bibliography: 10 marks Application + 10 marks Communication this is the alphabetical listing of every resource used in your research just as a bibliography and - after each reference used, you will include a brief description of the book/internet, etc. and explain its usefulness/relevance (or not) to your research Example: Haberman, Arthur and Adrian Shubert. The West and the World. Toronto: Gage Learning Corporation, 2002. A very recent history text, it is an overview of events in European history since 1500. A good place to begin; it provided some background useful to my understanding of the Enlightenment and 1 primary source by John Locke. However, it lacked the depth of information necessary for coverage of my topic. Stage 2 contd 2. Final Research Notes: 20 marks Knowledge - this time they must be extensive and clearly indicate your depth of information gathered you will now have used encyclopedia, internet, books and journal articles You will clearly show primary source. Lots!! AND Primary Source Selections: 10 marks Thinking Finding primary documents are an important part of historical research. Select at least 1 one page piece or several small pieces written / spoken by your seminar person or ones that pertain to your essay topic. Highlight portions that will support your thesis in the final essay or seminar 3. Essay outline: 10 marks Thinking + 10 marks Communication + 10 marks Application Although this is not your finished essay, it should clearly lay out what it will include: 2 pages in length, it will be in point form headings as shown below that represent each of the paragraphs you will use in your essay cite the sources of direct quotations, use of another's ideas and statistics Example: Introduction: - thesis statement the point of view you will prove and argue in the essay - set out the topics which are to be used, using 1 topic for each supporting argument i.e. paragraph in the essay Background - this should provide any necessary definitions, introduction to the time period and background to your essay, before you argue your case 1st Argument - this is your second most important point of proof that will support your thesis - provide quotation excerpts and facts in support (use imbedded style citations here) 2nd Argument - as above Etc. - as above to last argument that is your strongest # 1 point of proof Conclusion - restate your thesis and reiterate the reasons for supporting it without simply copying the introduction. This is difficult - work on it!! OR 3. Seminar Position & Arguments: 30 marks as above Example: Topic: The nature of the universe Person: Nicholas Copernicus Position: God created the universe as a perfect sphere. The earth rotates on an axis, with the other planets, moving around the sun in perfect circles. Mathematics is the key to understanding God's creation. Argument # 1: God created the universe as a perfect sphere be precise, yet clear in your use of specific explanations of what you believe cite specific primary sources you will use as proof of Copernicus' thinking on the topic. Argument # 2: the earth rotates on an axis ETC. Conclusion - summarize your arguments and why they should be accepted - show how your position can be defended against criticism Stage 3 ESSAY Final Evaluation The finished Essay 80 marks in all areas of the achievement chart 1500-2000 words, typed & double spaced Include a title page with your name, teacher, essay title, date the use of formal footnotes at the bottom of a page or numbered endnotes on 2nd to last page.
