UNIT 1 1500-1715 TRIAL RE-ENACTMENTS
For each trial there will be a defendant and
two people who will act as defence and prosecution lawyers. There will also be a judge who will run the
trial and pass judgement in the case.
1. 1540 The Trial of Hernando Cortés (1498-1547)
Charge: Mistreatment of the new world and its
people

Trial of Galileo Galilei (1564-1642)
Charge: Heresy
Knowledge: Research and provide the answers for
evaluation using text and library sources:
What is your person's relationship to the person and
question at issue? How would he/she
respond?

Use bibliography squares so you can create the formal bibliography
required in step 3.

Application: Create a timeline using 10 dates, that helps
you understand this person's actions, life and

4. Thinking: Write and submit a script

Decide
what your position is - for or against the issue under trial.
Witness: Prepare a written presentation of your ideas. You will give this in court as evidence on
the
question
being addressed in the trial of which you are a part. It must be based on fact!!
Devise a question for
your side's lawyer to ask you while testifying, and the appropriate answer.
Lawyer: Prepare opening and closing statements that
introduce and sum up the case. Devise a
question to
ask each witness on the opposing side.
Judge: Prepare an introduction that describes the
crime and lays out procedures. You will
ask the
lawyers to call each witness. Provide a judgement that describes the
punishment and provides a rationale for it.
Remember, it must reflect the time period!
You will have time to meet
with other group members.
5. Communication: Presentation: 20 marks
Be prepared to
present your evidence in a trial re-enactment.
Devise arguments to defend your
position when you are
interrogated.
Evaluation: Total 80 marks
