History Department CHC2D UNIT 2 1929-1946 Depression and War Assignment The Great Depression and World War II were decisive events in both Canadian and world history. For this unit, you will undertake a number of writing and speaking in role assignments that look at the lives and decisions of people in the period 1929 to 1946. Assignments that will be assessed for marks: Timeline: Create a timeline that chronologically lists 10 to 12 key events that shaped Canada during the period 1929 to 1946. This will be done in proper timeline format including dates, events and a brief description of each event. Be sure to emphasize what was happening to Canadians at home and overseas. Newspaper article: Write 1 newspaper article that covers either the story of the S.S. St. Louis or the Regina Riot. This will be written in columnar, news format and will include actual factual detail, opinion and selected eyewitness description of the events detailed. It should be 1 page. Review the key elements of a news article. Interview: Write 1 interview of the person assigned to you as if he/she was being interviewed live during the period 1939-45. This interview will include 10 questions and their scripted answers (use at least 2 of each of the 4 types of questions outlined in the text p. 113). This interview should provide details of the person's war experiences and insight into his/her contribution and response to the war. Present: Present this interview live in class with the aid of a partner. Be sure to include a hard copy of this interview with your assignment.
