Beginning Instrumental
(AMI1O1)
Grade 9, Open
This course is designed for beginning students who wish to learn to play a woodwind,
brass or percussion band instrument. No previous musical experience is required
to take this course. Students will be taught the fundamentals of musical performance
on their chosen instrument. The course includes music theory, musical analysis/listening,
computers, and field trips. Course Costs: Music Consumables Fee: $30

Instrumental Music
(Students With Previous Experience) (AMI1O2)
Grade 9, Open
This course is designed for performers on woodwind, brass and percussion instruments
who have already taken instrumental music at the elementary school level or who
have studied their instrument privately. The course includes music theory, musical
analysis/listening, piano, computers, concert band rehearsals, concerts and field
trips.
Course Costs: Music Consumables Fee: $30.
Prerequisite: Grade 7 or 8 Instrumental Music (Band)
Vocal (AMV1O)
Grade 9, Open
Vocal music in grade nine is for beginning or advanced singers. Traditional choral
music as well as contemporary styles (jazz, rock and musical theatre) form the
basis of the course.
Prerequisite: None
Music Repertoire (AMR1O1)
Grade 9, Open
The Grade 9 repertoire course is for students wishing to participate in the Grade
9 Band or the school choir. A wide variety of literature will be performed including
traditional, jazz, pop and film music. Classes are scheduled after regular school
hours for the entire school year. Students taking this course are also expected
to take AMI101 during the regular school day. Course Costs: $30.00 consumables
and instrument rental fee.

Instrumental (AMI2O)
Grade 10, Open
Grade ten instrumental music further develops the performance skills acquired
in grade nine. History, theory and concert band literature will help aid in achieving
these goals. Participation is expected in the Wind Ensemble.
Course costs: an instrument or a $50.00 fee and mouthpiece. Music Consumables

Vocal
(AMV2O)
Grade 10, Open
Grade ten vocal music further develops the performance skills acquired in grade
nine. History, theory and choral literature will aid in achieving these goals.
Participation is expected in the Concert Choir.

Beginning
Piano (AMK2O)
Grade 10, Open
This course is designed for students of all grades and levels of ability. Working
individually at electronic keyboards, students will study techniques, theory,
history and performance of art and popular songs.
Course costs: $20.00 and a set of headphones Recommended Background: Grade 9 Music
course strongly recommended

Music Repertoire (AMR2O)
Grade 10, Open
The Grade 10 Repertoire course is for music students wishing to participate in
the Symphonic Band , Wind Ensemble or the Denison Singers. Students will study
challenging music repertoire. Classes are scheduled after regular school hours
for the entire school year and students are placed in an appropriate ensemble
according to their instrument and ability. Course Costs: $30.00 consumables and
instrument rental fee.

Beginning
Guitar (AMG2O)
Grade 10, Open
Students in this course will develop basic guitar technique, including melody
picking and providing chordal accompaniments. Using six string acoustic guitars,
students will explore various guitar styles, chord charts and melodic notation.
Theory, musical listening/analysis and creative activities will aid in achieving
these goals.
Course Costs: Student must provide their own acoustic guitar. Recommended Background:
Grade 9 Music Course strongly recommended

Grade 11, University/College Preparation
The Grade 11 instrumental music courses introduce students to advanced senior
technical skills and repertoire with a large emphasis on solo and small ensemble
performance as well as jazz music. Theory is studied at the Grade Two Conservatory
level and advanced music listening/analysis, computer MIDI and composition and
arranging skills are also studied. Participation in a school concert band is expected.
Extra costs: $25 consumables and instrument rental fee.

AMV3M)
Grade 11, University/College Preparation
The Grade 11 vocal music course introduces students to advanced vocal technique
and repertoire of both traditional and modern styles. Large emphasis is placed
on solo and small ensemble performance. Theory is studied at the Grade Two Conservatory
level and advanced music listening/analysis, computer MIDI and composition and
arranging skills are also studied.. Participation in a school concert choir is
expected.
Prerequisite: AMI1O, AMV1O or AMV2O

according to their instrument and ability. Course Costs: $30.00 consumables and
instrument rental fee.

Intermediate Guitar (AMG3M)
Grade 11, University/College Preparation
Students in this course will develop intermediate guitar technique, including
melody picking and more study of more advanced chords. Using six string acoustic
guitars, students will explore traditional rock , jazz and popular guitar styles,
chord charts and melodic notation. Theory, musical listening/analysis and creative
activities will aid in achieving these goals. Course Costs: Student must provide
their own acoustic guitar + $30.00

Intermediate Piano (AMK3M)
Grade 11, University/College Preparation
The second level piano keyboard course will build on the basics studied in AMK
301. Students will use Alfred’s’s Adult Piano, Book 2 as their basic
reference book and will be also encouraged to learn material of their own choosing.
Theory, musical listening/analysis and creative activities will round out the
learning experience.
Prerequisite: AMK2O or Conservatory Exam
Music Theatre (AMT3O)
Grade 11, Open
This performance course prepares you for acting, singing and moving on stage and
assumes that you have some experience in vocal music and drama. This course trains
students to be part of a musical production and students must take on both performance
and non-performance roles as they produce a show. Vocal technique, stage craft,
journal writing and research form the basis of evaluation. Course Costs: $30.00
fee for materials and musical score/script rental.
Prerequisite: Grade 9/10 music or drama
Advanced Guitar (AMG4M)
Grade 12, University/College Preparation
Students in the Grade 12 Guitar Course will perform at an advanced level. Using
six string acoustic guitars, students will perform traditional, rock , jazz
and popular guitar styles. Theory, musical listening/analysis, computer MIDI
and creative activities will aid in achieving these goals. An emphasis will
be placed on solo and ensemble literature at this level. Course Costs: Student
must provide their own acoustic guitar.

Instrumental
Music Band (AMI4M)
Grade 12, University/College Preparation
Students in a Grade 12 Instrumental music course are expected to perform technique
and repertoire at an advanced level of ability on their instrument. Performance
on a secondary instrument, solo and ensemble literature will all be undertaken.
Jazz techniques will also be studied. Music Harmony, composition, computer MIDI,
research and advanced music listening/analysis are also part of this course.
Choir participation is suggested and participation in the Symphonic Band or
the Wind Ensemble is required.
Course Costs: $30.00 consumables and instrument rental fee.

Advanced
Piano (AMK4M)
Grade 12, University/College Preparation
This course is for students who have advanced levels of piano ability. Students
will use Alfred’s Piano Course book 3, Conservatory books and music of
their own choosing. Advanced theory, harmony, computer MIDI, and music listening/analysis
will be studied.
Prerequisite: AMK3M or Conservatory Exam
Music Repertoire
(AMR4M)
Grade 12, University/College Preparation
The Grade 12 Repertoire course is for music students wishing to participate
in the Senior Wind Ensemble or the Denison Singers. Students will perform challenging
senior band repertoire, provide leadership in the Symphonic Band or Wind Ensemble
as well as perform the principal parts of the repertoire.. Classes are scheduled
after regular school hours for the entire school year and students are placed
in an appropriate ensemble according to their instrument and ability. Course
Costs: $30.00 consumables and instrument rental fee.
Prerequisite: AMR3M or AMI3M
Music Theatre (AMT4M)
Grade 12, University/College Preparation
This advanced performance course assumes that students have ability in acting,
singing and movement. Students are expected to demonstrate leadership and participate
in a school musical in both a performance and non-performance capacity. Journal
writing, research and theatre review are also a part of the evaluation component.
Course Costs: $30.00 fee for materials and musical score/script rental.
Prerequisite: AMT3O, ADA3O or Grade 11 Music
Vocal/Choral Music (AMV4M)
Grade 12, University/College Preparation
Students in The Grade 12 vocal music courses must display an advanced level of
vocal technique and perform advanced repertoire of both traditional and modern
styles. Solo and small ensemble performance is an essential element in this course.
Music Harmony, composition, computer MIDI, research and advanced music listening/analysis
are studied.. Participation and leadership in a school concert choir is expected.
