BASKETBALL RULES- GRADES 9 & 10

 

The team: each team shall have five players on the floor at a time 
 

Start of game: started by a jump ball * between two opposing centers (in center restraining circle ) 
 

Scoring:- field goal counts 2 points (any shot from inside the 3-point line, during play of the game ) 

-free throw counts 1 point 

-technical foul counts 1 point 

-shot from outside 3-point line counts 3 points 
 

Jump Ball: -occurs only to begin the game 

-all other 'jump ball' situations will be decided by the 'alternating possession rule i.e. 

-at start of remaining quarter/half 

-after a 'held' ball 

-after a double foul 

-if ref does not see which team causes ball to go out of bounds 
 

Out of Bounds: -player is out of bounds when she touches floor or any object on or outside the boundary 

-ball is out of bounds as above and if ball hits back of backboard 
 

Throw-ins: -player must put ball in play within 5 seconds of receiving it from ref -occur after: 

a) any violation 

b) any made basket (throw in by non- scoring team from behind their baseline) 
 

Violations:-dribble with two hands on ball/dribble, pick it up, dribble again (dbl.dribble) 

-offence in the key for more than 3 seconds 

-failing to throw ball in within 5 seconds 

-running with the bailor changing pivot feet (travelling) 

-kicking ball with feet 

-offence returns to their back court after having crossed 10-second line (over and back) 

-offence fails to get the ball from their back court to their front court (over the 10-second line) within 10 seconds 

-offence fails to drive, shoot or pass within 5-seconds, if the referee judges that they are being closely guarded 
 

Fouls: -holding, pushing, reaching in, tripping, blocking etc. (disqualified after 5) 

-if shooter is fouled, gets opportunity to shoot foul shot(s) 

-if it is a 'non-shooting' foul, (and 'bonus' has not been reached), non- offending team is awarded the ball out of bounds
