McCutcheon ADVENTURE LEADERSHIP (Grade 11 English, Phys-ed, Leadership, and Interdisciplinary Studies) INFORMATION FOR: STUDENTS AND PARENTS The Denison Physical and Health Department has offered an Outdoor Education Course since September of 1997. The new improved outdoor adventure program will be successful in developing leadership skills, confidence, creative problem solving and team building skills. The course will include both theory (classroom) and related outdoor activity components. It is hoped that students will develop an appreciation for the outdoors while learning the necessary skills to camp, mountain bike, backpack, and canoe safely. The value of these activities will be promoted as healthy lifelong pursuits. THEORY COMPONENTS PHYSICAL COMPONENTS Wilderness First Aid & Safety Low Organization Outdoor Games Outdoor Equipment Bicycle Training Orienteering Four-day Cycling Trip Nutrition Five day Canoe trip Survival Skills Optional Weekend Trips Bicycle Maintenance HALF DAY FIELD TRIPS Trip Planning Four-day backpacking trip Canoeing and Backpacking skills Four-day Winter experience Students must pass the following tests to participate on the canoe trip. Safety issues are taught in both the theory and practical components of the program; therefore, attendance to every class is vital. Outdoor Adventure Leadership Student Name: ___________________________ Dear Parent/Guardian Your son/daughter has chosen our Grade 11 Outdoor Adventure Leadership program. This program is the first of its kind in York Region and gives the students the opportunity to participate in a hands-on learning environment that is both recreational and educational. Time and again, I have marveled at the profound effect that an outdoor experience can have on our students. The course fee is $500.00 (Subtract the $100.00 dollar deposit) $400.00 + $100.00 dollar rental deposit. New this year: The course is also asking for a $100.00 dollar rental deposit. This money covers all rental equipment for your son/daughter for the year. If your son/daughter does not need any rental equipment then you will receive a full $100 dollar refund at the end of the semester. If your son/daughter would like to rent a thermarest, sleeping bag, rain gear etc. Then the cost of the rental items will come off your $100 deposit. You will receive a refund of all money owing minus the rental costs at the end of the semester. This money helps cover the cost of travel, food, and board for a Team building trip, Canoe Trip, Hiking trip, Adventure trip, and a Winter experience. The cost for each of these trips to the public would exceed $1000.00 dollars each, therefore your son/daughter is getting great value for their money. I ask that the money owed be paid in either one instalment or through three post dated chegues. If a payment plan is necessary please dont hesitate to contact me and we can organize an appropriate schedule. Dates of submission: We ask all money (regardless of the method of payment) returned by Feb 8th. If you are choosing to use the three payment method please make payments out for February 8th, March 6th, and April 27th. I look forward to providing your son/daughter with a tremendous outdoor experience.
