Terminology
Kick offs:
-
occur at beginning of game; to start second half and after a score Note:
after a score, the team scored on kicks off
Scrum:
-
forwards from two teams 'bind' together after a minor infringement, leaving
a 'tunnel' between the two 'packs' of forwards
-
ball is put into the scrum, between the opposing 'front rows'
-
using feet only, ball is moved backwards (team pushes over the ball) through
the pack and is then picked up and passed to the backs
Passing:
-
all passes must be to the side or backwards (no forward passes)
Tackle:
-
only ball carrier can be tackled
-
no blocking allowed
-
no high tackles
-
to be tackled, player must be brought down to ground and held there
Line out:
-
after ball goes out of bounds over sideline
-
both sets of forwards line up at right angles to the touch lines and ball
is thrown between the two lines of players
Maul:
-
player being tackled stays on their feet and waits for her players to arrive
and help get the ball moving
Ruck:
-
if tackled to ground, player must release the ball-this can be done by
placing ball on ground behind them: their team-mates then try to 'push
over' the ball (forwards pushing against forwards)
Object
of Game - to outscore the opponents by compiling points
in one of four ways:
-
Try (5 points): -ball must be touched down on the ground on or beyond goal
line
-
Convert (2 points): -kick taken after a try is scored (taken in a straight
line back from where try is scored). Must pass between uprights
-
Penalty goal (3 points) -kick taken for infringement of rules. Must pass
between uprights
-
Drop goal (3 points) -half volley kick taken during play
